Kakadu is managed by the Australian Government and the Bininj, the native people. The indigenous population of the Bininj divide the year of the Kakadu in six different seasons. The first season is Gunumeleng, in October, when the afternoon air brings in the scent of the rain, enhancing the perfume of the paperbacks (eucalyptus) in bloom.
During the period called Gudjewg (during January and February) the clamorous waterfalls have a great abundance of water. The sky threatens with tropical storms and lightning lights up the nights. During Banggereng, in March, you can admire the fruit trees, while the best time to enjoy the birds that live in the billabong is Wurrgeng season, in June.
So basically, you get to see a different Kakadu depending on the season. Various archeological studies show that the Kakadu has been inhabited by indigenous people from 50,000 years ago. You don’t wanna miss the open-air galleries, where painted rocks show how customs, traditions, laws and stories are passed down from generation to generation. In 1985 when the area got back to its original owners, the name Uluru was added. Today they manage the park along with Parks Australia, a government body.
