Extending 400 kilometers from North to South and 70 kilometers from East to West, Kruger Park expands over almost 2 million hectares of the northeastern Transvaal plain, and is considered one of the most famous parks in the world. It was opened in 1898 by Paul Kruger, last president of the former Boer Republics when he noticed a fast decrease of wild fauna, due to hunting. Back then he asserted: “If we don’t close this small part of the Iowveld now, our grandchildren will never know what a lion, a kudu or an antelope looks like.” Today, Kruger Park is the feather in the cap of South African parks and is one of the few in Africa to be open all year round.
